What are we doing?

One of the things I think about a lot (maybe more than I should) is crappy Christian art. It’s funny that Christians are willing to admit it exists, but it always seems to be with the ‘Yeah, I’ve read about that’ mindset. You know, the ‘I have a friend who thinks Plus One is cool’ mindset.

The term ‘Christian music industry’ scares me. I consider ‘Christian industry’ a borderline oxymoron, because as far as I see it, an industry exists to perpetuate itself and make a profit, which I don’t think are some of the main goals of the Christian faith. I dislike Christian music’s ‘follow the popular’ mindset – shouldn’t we be trying to make something original and cool, something that might be around and relevant in ten years rather than following the current trends and producing crap that we’ll all be laughing about in two?

I have friends who like a band called Apologetix, which is kind of a Christian version of Weird Al, taking popular song and putting Christian lyrics to them. Recreating the songs, that takes musical aptitude, I agree with that. But to me, the whole lyrical thing feels…pathetic. In the Christian story, God is the Creator. He created well, everything. We are called to reflect His creativity, to remind the world of how creative YHWH is. How does doing weak, derviative art glorify Him?
